If there’s one thing that stands above anything else for me in a game, it’s if they achieve something unique. When focusing on the most recent releases, this is largely limited to looking at what has come before it. However, sometime later you can also start to take into account what comes after. I’d say it’s similar to the whole phrase “____ hasn’t aged well.” Yet instead of from perspective of how the ever moving bar leaves some titles behind, it’s more about about how the level of iteration dilutes the original.
I’ve feared nostalgia for years. Recommending or highlighting something simply because I enjoyed it as a kid feels irresponsible. I usually want to talk about a game’s current day relevance. Yet as I frowned upon analyzing with rose-tinted glasses, I had a lingering sense of doubt. It seems like a silly question ask, but I started to wonder if I was being influenced by nostalgia when choosing what to play.
I have a weakness for cute anime things, especially if it looks like it’s from the 80s or 90s. While I had heard of the Japanese Umihara Kawase series, I’ve never been too big into importing. All of the games have passed me by until the most recent Nintendo 3DS release, which was localized under the name Yumi’s Odd Odyssey.
I’m finally giving up on ignoring indie games. They just won’t go away. I’ve gotta deal with them eventually, so it’s about time I start playing some. I thought it’d be fitting to make one of my first forays into the space with Cave Story, a title that pre-dates the modern indie movement.
With the recent release of Yoshi’s Island on the Wii U’s Virtual Console, I thought I’d take the time to actually play the game, albeit on my 3DS instead. I was born in1990 and my exposure to the Super Nintendo was limited. I remember playing classics like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart, but my tiny toddler brain couldn’t really comprehend what was going on. Consoles like the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 are the start of my most significant gaming memories. I have a lot 16-bit experiences to catch up on, and playing Yoshi’s Island was an attempt to cross one of these off my list. Despite all the praise for the title, I initially found myself underwhelmed.
The third and final Star Wars arcade title in the origianl trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back! This title is not only the best of the series but its a technical marvel for its time, offering a fully 3D battlefield for players to roam while taking down AT-STs and AT-ATs.
TheSpeedGamers are about rev up for another full week long marathon that will consist of tons of Star Wars titles played over the 168-hour period. Of course, it is all for a good cause as they’ll be fundraising for Direct Relief International over the week. To lead up to the marathon, I’m producing a set of three videos looking at three arcade classics in the Star Wars series. This is the second of the trilogy.
